Racism...
I want to take this opportunity on the last day of 'Black History Month' to put forth my views on racism. Racism is an ugly word. In order to understand it's true meaning, you must understand exactly what race is. You also need to have a clear view of the differences between racism and predujice.
The way I learned it in Science Class was that there are only three true races on the Earth: Caucasoid - those being of European and Middle Eastern stock, Mongoloid - those of asian decent, and Negroid - those being of African stock. There are many theories and studies of how each of these three races became spread accross the world.
Any person that hates another person solely for the color of their skin is surely a racist. To be so crude of mind is a grave disgrace.
Ethnic considerations have historically marked individuals as racist, but this is not the case. Simply disliking someones cultural or ethnic practices is not racist but is predujicial. Prdejudice without forethought is disgraceful, but disliking certain aspects of anothers culture is not unreasonable and certainly not racist.
Some examples of Ethnic/cultural labels which are often confused with race: Hispanics, Indians (native american or asian), and Muslims.
My personal disgust with the whole Hip Hop culture does not make me a racist; I dislike Eminem just as much as I dislike 50 Cents...
So teach your children to look for the positives within each person they come in contact with. If they find none then they should engage that person to change or avoid them like the plague no matter what the color of their skin.
